Day 13- Santa Fe, NM > Las Vegas, NM ( 73 miles)

 May 19

A few photos below from the rest day in Santa Fe.

The oldest church structure in the USA is here...San Miguel (John/Linda N - small irony?):

Yep, we're still eating like fat kids. These might have been the best donuts that have entered my mouth...

This is the view from Fort Marcy...another blue sky day with perfect weather.

Man, did the rest day and our wives being here provide some serious oxygen. What a cool city! We had been here before, but we did not spend much time in Old Town Santa Fe previously; our Airbnb was an easy walk from there, and we had a great time.

As we are heading to dinner on Saturday night:

This city has a rich history, and we enjoyed reading about it as we walked the hillside above the city where Fort Marcy used to be located. Beau G's Dad (Skip) had a huge collection that Beau and his sister loaned to the museum that is very interesting - check out this video PBS. I had never heard of Fred Harvey, and I'm glad Beau shared this with me.

Get to Santa Fe if you have not been here, and stay in Old Town...trust me.

Today's route:

Today's ride was another special day with perfect weather and amazing views as we all agreed that we felt like we were cheating on some of the downhills because they were great, and we had a tailwind much of  the day. It was definitely hilly with some rollers also, but it was a cool route as we came out of the mountains and through the foothills. You can see that we we climbed ~ 4,000 feet over 73 miles, and some of the descents were fantastic even though we had some crazy wind gusts. I did much better on the descents today as they were straighter, roads were good, and little traffic (they could have a descending class for cowards on today's ride is the truth, and I would have passed); my max speed was still only 38.6 mph (Bill got to 45 for perspective). We rolled into the hotel around 1:30 and had nachos and a beer at the hotel. This hotel is vintage and quirky but very cool. This was the hotel where "No Country for Old Men" saw Woody Harralson get killed by one of the best villains (Anton) ever; another Cormac McCarthy classic.

Day's photos:

Old church ruins along the Santa Fe Trail where we had one of our SAG stops:

Yep, we hit a milestone on the ride today:

Where Woody met his maker:

Nachos that were so good, we needed an extra round :

Today was the hilly day for the week and was absolutely one of the days that we imagined having when we decided to do this cross-country trek. No quotes for today as I ran long (again). Tomorrow will be a long one at 110 miles and hot!

Talk tomorrow!

  2. Congratulations to everyone on hitting 1000 miles today. Glad y’all were able to go by the museum in Santa Fe. My dad loved that town.

There are some Fred Harvey properties in Las Vegas too. The same gentleman, Allen Affeldt, owns the Plaza Hotel also owns the Castaneda there in town. He’s in the PBS video. Hope you guys have tail winds tomorrow. Be safe - Beau G.

  3. I’m reading this at 7:30am and all I want are those nachos. Going to need a calories counter along with mileage each day

Final thoughts...

June 26 We drove home from Boston on Sat/Sun, and the transition from seeing the roads as a cyclist versus driving a car was a little bizarr...
